Introduction to Vice-Chair Claire

Hello all! My name is Claire Black and I am extremely excited to be your vice-chair for OAS. I am a senior majoring in Political Science and minoring in Data Science and Public Policy. I am passionate about environmental justice and finding data driven solutions to international policy problems.

I have some experience working in a legal self help center, working in the California government’s Natural Resources Agency, and conducting research at Berkeley Law’s Center for Comparative Equality and Anti-Discrimination Law. Also, I have been a college admissions advisor for high achieving, low income students, so feel free to reach out with any questions about the scary college admissions process!

I love spending time outdoors, reading poetry, listening to indie rock music, and playing with my beautiful beagle-husky mix (pictured). In high school, MUN taught me invaluable lessons in leadership, public speaking, and empathy. I feel so grateful to continue the wonderful tradition of BMUN in this virtual environment!

Looking forward to meeting you all!

Introduction to Head Chair Jacqueline 👩🏽‍⚖️

Image
Hello, OAS delegates! I am Jacqueline Arteaga and I am your head chair for this session of BMUN. I am a senior studying Political Science and Spanish Literature with some of my academic interests centering on international relations especially in terms of authoritarianism and state corruption.  Outside of BMUN, I am currently volunteering with the East Bay Sanctuary Covenant, a non profit that focuses on providing legal services and education to low income immigrants. I have also returned to an old job of mine as a BUILD mentor in which I help children reach their literacy goals.  However, when I am not in school or working with any of these organizations, I enjoy watching telenovelas and Korean dramas. I also enjoy listening to pop music, musicals, and older Latin ballads.  I can't wait to meet you all in February and see your amazing ideas.

COVID-19 and The Migration Crisis

Image
Hello delegates! While doing research for topic two, it is important to think about the ways in which COVID-19 has affected the migration policies within your country. Migrants within the Americas have faced unprecedented challenges due to the border closures and lack of available services during the pandemic. Border closures, which often occurred with little warning, forced many migrants out of their country of refuge. Additionally, the withdrawal of NGOs has led to a sharp decline in the amount of humanitarian aid assisting migrant populations. With fewer and fewer resources available, migrants have become even more vulnerable to the dangers of human trafficking, sexual abuse, and extreme poverty. As detailed in the New York Times’ expose on rising inequality in Latin America during the pandemic, many Venezuelan refugees in Colombia had no choice but “returning to a nation where they were almost certain that disaster awaited.” A joint UNHCR (UN Refugee Agency) and IOM (Internat...

The War on Drugs: General Cienfuegos and Government Corruption in Mexico

Image
Happy Friday, Delegates!  This week, in relation to Topic A, we want you to think about the reality of government corruption within proposing solutions to the War on Drugs:                   In November of 2020, after having been accused of taking several bribes in exchange for protecting drug cartel leaders, the ex-Defense Ministry, General Cienfuegos, had his case of drug charges dropped in an announcement from the United States' Attorney General William Barr based on the justifications of preserving diplomatic relations with Mexico. With that, General Cienfuegos was allowed to return to Mexico where the Mexican government was supposedly going to proceed with an investigation into such claims. This puzzled many, including a previous U.S. attorney in New York that questioned the suspicious actions of the United States raising such a high-profile case against General Cienfuegos, and then dropping such cases only a month ...
